What to do when you receive a DMCA claim on your content

What Happens When You Receive a Claim

If a copyright holder files a DMCA claim against one of your videos, you will receive a notification in your Message Center. The notification includes the name of the video, the claimant's description of the infringement, and a link to view the full claim details.

You can view and manage all claims at Studio → Messages, or navigate directly to a specific claim at /studio/messages/claims/[claim-id].

Your Response Options

You have 7 days from the time the claim is filed to respond. Your options are:

1. Accept the Claim

If you acknowledge that your content infringes on the claimant's copyright, you can accept the claim. This starts a 7-day rectification period during which you can modify or remove the infringing content. If you complete the rectification, the claim is resolved without further penalties.

2. File a Counter-Notice (Dispute)

If you believe the claim is invalid — for example, you have permission to use the content, or your use qualifies as fair use — you can file a counter-notice. Your counter-notice should include a detailed explanation and any supporting evidence.

After you file a counter-notice, the rights holder has 7 days to respond. If they don't respond, you win by default. See the Counter-Notices page for more details.

3. Communicate with the Claimant

The Message Center includes a messaging thread where you can communicate directly with the rights holder. This can be useful for resolving misunderstandings, negotiating agreements, or requesting more information about the claim.

What Happens If You Don't Respond

If you do not respond within 7 days, the rights holder wins the claim by default. This may result in content restrictions or removal. It's always in your best interest to respond to claims promptly, even if you intend to dispute them.

The Rectification Period

If you accept a claim, you enter a 7-day rectification period. During this time, you should:

  • Edit your video to remove the infringing material
  • Replace the infringing content with original material
  • Or remove the video entirely if necessary

Once you've made your changes, mark the rectification as complete in the claim details page. If you don't complete rectification within 7 days, the claim resolves in favor of the rights holder.

Protecting Your Content

  • Only use content you have created or have explicit permission to use
  • Understand fair use guidelines before incorporating others' work
  • Keep records of licenses, permissions, and original creation files
  • Respond promptly to any claims you receive
